CLASSIFICATION

There are nine classification categories in paratriathlon, divided among three categories: wheelchair (PTWC), ambulant (PTS), and vision impaired (PTVI).

Most limb-different paratriathletes on Team USA compete in the four PTS classifications. Each of these four classifications has a separate Paralympic medal competition. Lower numbers correspond to higher levels of impairment and activity limitation:

PTS2:  Severe impairments
PTS3:  Significant impairments
PTS4:  Moderate impairments
PTS5:  Mild impairments

Classifications are assigned on the basis of physical factors such as muscle power, limb difference, limb length, neurological function, and joint function, as well as technical assessments in the three paratriathlon disciplines (running, swimming, and cycling).

For details about classification, consult World Triathlon’s website. For an overview of the sport and a one-minute explainer video, see the Tokyo 2020 Paratriathlon page.
