Travel Photos Change Perceptions of Limb Loss

When Mehmet Aslan’s moving photograph of two amputees won a major international award last fall, it demonstrated how powerfully a single image can alter perceptions of limb loss. So imagine how global understandings might change if several of the world’s most renowned photographers trained their lenses on limb-different subjects.

Enter the All-Inclusive Photo Project. Designed to give greater media visibility to people from many different underrepresented communities, this open-source collection features images by some of the most talented photographers on the planet.

The All-Inclusive Photo Project was launched by Celebrity Cruises after the company recognized that its own advertising failed to portray the full spectrum of passengers on their ships.

“For far too long, ‘all-inclusive’ in the travel industry has meant everything on your vacation is included in one price,” Celebrity CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo told CNN. “For vacations to live up to the marketing moniker ‘all-inclusive,’ they should [use] images that are inclusive of all, not just a few.”

The company’s research found that people with disabilities were considered the most underrepresented population in travel marketing. The All-Inclusive Photo Project is Celebrity’s attempt to correct that shortfall while encouraging other travel companies to follow suit.
