There are so many nonprofits doing good work on behalf of amputees that it seems impossible to keep track of them all. But we’re going to try anyway. Every week we’ll highlight one organization or person that’s out there trying to make life better for amputees. This week’s Worthy Cause: Move for Jenn Foundation.
Name: Move for Jenn Foundation
Founder: The cancer that ultimately cost Jenn Andrews her right foot was first discovered during a pedicure seven years ago. She had surgery to remove the initial tumor, but by late 2017 the cancer had returned. As a health and wellness coach and the young mother of two toddlers, Andrews wanted to ensure a cancer-free future—and amputation was the only option. Just before having her foot removed in March 2018, she recorded a Facebook Live video urging her friends to get out and exercise on her behalf on the day of her surgery. The post went viral, giving Andrews the inspiration, the visibility, and the core supporters to launch her foundation.
What they do: Help amputees afford fitness-oriented prosthetics so they can remain active and healthy. In addition, the Move for Jenn Foundation funds sarcoma research. You can apply for either a prosthesis grant or a research grant.
Who they serve: Amputees who’ve lost a limb to sarcoma.
In Jenn’s own words: “I wanted to be able to run again. I wanted be able to do races again. [But] I quickly learned how expensive it was to be a young active amputee. . . . . You might not be able to change the world, but you can change someone’s world. For me, having this foundation and helping other people gain back what I lost and was able to regain again, has really been the biggest blessing in the healing process.”
