UHC Settles Prosthesis Class Action Suit

On May 23, United HealthCare Services (UHC) settled a class action suit that accused the insurer of improperly denying coverage for prosthetic devices in violation of federal benefits law.

The class action included more than 1,000 UnitedHealth Group beneficiaries. Details of the settlement will be made public in mid-June, according to Bloomberg Law.

In the original complaint filed in December 2017, David Trujillo and Deana Harden accused UnitedHealth Group and its subsidiaries, United HealthCare Services and UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co., of violating the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) by not using appropriate procedures for assessing the claims for prosthetic arm and leg devices.
