Getting Food and Drink When You’re Stuck at Home

Whether you’re unable to get out of the house because of health or mobility problems, lack of transportation, or the threat of the coronavirus, you still need food and drink.

While some amputees have caregivers or family members who can shop for them, you may not be so fortunate. So, what can you do?

Fortunately, these days, food and drink can be delivered to your home in many ways. Here are a few examples:

Meals on Wheels is variously supported by federal, state, local, and private funding. If you meet the program’s requirements, you may be able to get nutritious meals delivered to your door free or be charged on a sliding fee scale.

While you’ll sometimes need to pay delivery fees and tips for these services, you may save money by not requiring a car and the additional insurance, parking, and fuel costs that can go along with it. Also, in some cases, the delivery is free if the bill is over a certain amount.

In some areas, nonprofit organizations also provide volunteers who will shop for seniors and people with disabilities and deliver the items to their homes.

While some of these services are available by telephone, some will require a smartphone or computer. If you need help, ask a friend or relative or hire a professional to get you set up and trained—or, if necessary, ask someone to do the ordering for you.

Editor’s Note: Because the situation in various communities is changing quickly, some of these services may not be available in your area at this time. If they are not available in your area, check to see if others are. If any are not currently operating, be sure to check again later because they may reinstate operations at any time.
