Welcome to the premiere issue of Amplitude—a bimonthly magazine dedicated to making a difference in the lives of amputees, their family members, and their caregivers.
Amplitude Media Group (AMG) is very excited about producing this publication, and we hope that you will both enjoy and benefit from it.
Many amputees say that they not only want to survive after their amputation but that they also want to thrive. That’s exactly what Amplitude is all about.
I think of the word “amplitude” as a combination of the words “amputee,” “amplify,” and “attitude.” In just a single word, “amplitude” implies so many things.
“Living with amplitude” means having a positive attitude in the face of difficulties. It’s having a positive attitude toward rehabilitation and the possibilities for your future and having “an attitude” against health problems and negative thinking from yourself or others.
It’s having a bit of stubbornness when people insinuate that you shouldn’t try or can’t do something because you’re an amputee. It’s staying confident in the face of doubts and saying, “Don’t tell me what I can’t do!”
Over the years, I have learned that when you are missing one or more limbs, no matter at what level, living will take more effort. The additional effort required will depend on whether you want to do what you’ve always done or you want to live beyond your former life. I have also learned that people often have the ability to rise to meet these additional challenges.
Within the pages of Amplitude, you’ll find stories about people who participate in extreme activities after their amputation, and others who just want to live their daily lives more fully—to get out of bed, to make dinner, to do the things they need to do around the house or to play with their children or grandchildren. You’ll find information and encouragement to help you achieve these goals or to do more than you ever thought possible. We won’t tell you that you have to run marathons, climb mountains, or jump out of airplanes to be successful; on the other hand, we won’t tell you that you can’t. As you pursue goals you might have, we hope that you’ll simply consider Amplitude an essential informational and motivational resource—a friendly companion to accompany you on your journey.
In addition to Amplitude, AMG also provides a website, an e-newsletter, social media, and other informational products. Please help us spread the word about these free resources so others can benefit from them too.
