Tips for Helping Your Loved One Cope With Diabetes

Diabetes is a hard disease to handle alone, but when people have the support of their family and friends, they are better able to manage it. Here are some ways you can support your loved one:

  • Read about diabetes online at www.YourDiabetesInfo.org.
  • Ask your loved one’s healthcare team for more information about managing diabetes.
  • Discuss your desire to help with your loved one.
  • Ask how you can help. (Examples: Would it help if I prepare special meals or stop buying sweets? Would it help if I take walks or participate in some other type of exercise with you? Would it help if I learn to give insulin?)
  • Ask if he or she would like reminders about doctor visits, when to check blood sugar, and when to take medicine.
  • Join a diabetes support group—in person or online.

Find ways to help him or her manage the stress of living with diabetes. Being a good listener is often the most important thing you can do to help.
