Team USA’s final medal Paralympic medal count ended up at 104, with 37 golds. Both figures rank as the second-highest in history, surpassed only by the 115 medals and 40 golds the Americans won five years ago in Rio.
Amputee athletes made up about a third of Team USA’s overall Paralympic contingent, and they brought home roughly one-third of the medals. In total, 23 amputees won individual medals, and more than a dozen contributed to medal-winning teams or relays. Here’s a quick summary of how the individual medals broke down:
Gold: Nine winners, 11 medals (Jessica Long and Oksana Masters won two each)
Silver: Six winners, 7 medals (Jessica Long won two)
Bronze: Eight winners, 9 medals (Julia Gaffney won two)
When we include the team sports and relays, more than 40 American amputees who competed in Tokyo are coming home with a medal. The two most prolific podium finishers were Jessica Long (six medals) and Elizabeth Marks (three); Marks was the only US amputee to set a world record at the Games.
