The limb-loss community achieved some huge triumphs in the 2023 legislative cycle. Four states passed new laws to broaden insurance coverage for recreational prosthetic devices, as part of a national initiative dubbed “So Kids Can Move.” The original goal was to liberalize insurance for young amputees, but the laws ended up surpassing that idea and covering everyone, regardless of age.
That’s why So Kids Can Move has been rebranded as So Every Body Can Move for the 2024 legislative sessions. The campaign will once again be led by grassroots advocates on a state-by-state basis, with coordination and support from the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association, Amputee Coalition, National Association for the Advancement of Orthotics and Prosthetics, and the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists.
Five states already have bills teed up for 2024, and national organizers expect more than a dozen states to file bills in the upcoming year. There’s still time to add yours to the list.
