Photograph of the fashion show participants courtesy of UNYQ.On September 15, the White House hosted a Design For All event that showcased inclusive design, assistive technology, and prostheses. The event was hosted by the White House Office of Public Engagement and Office of Science and Technology Policy to recognize the work and experiences of designers, engineers, models, and companies “creating and using innovative technology and design to break down barriers, reduce stigma, and improve the quality of life for Americans with disabilities.” Administration officials, industry experts, and designers gave opening remarks, and a fashion show highlighted inclusive creations.
Included in the fashion show were several O&P devices such as a 3D-printed hand that was designed and is worn by a young man who works with the e-NABLE community and a 3D-printed pediatric prosthetic arm created by Open Bionics; the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Modular Prosthetic Limb with osseointegrated attachment, modeled by Johnny Matheny; a prosthetic leg; a 3D-printed UNYQ scoliosis brace with embedded technology that monitors wear compliance and pressure points to ensure fit and function; and 3D-printed lower-limb prosthetic covers by UNYQ and ALLELES.
