The Amputee Coalition, in conjunction with members of its Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee (SciMAC), has created a body mass index (BMI) calculator to help individuals with limb loss assess their weight status. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that is commonly used to assess a person’s weight status.
In a press release, the Amputee Coalition stressed that the calculator, found on its website, should not be used as a diagnostic tool; if a person’s BMI indicates that he or she may be overweight or obese, the Amputee Coalition suggests that he or she visit a physician to discuss healthy lifestyle choices.
