Cunningham grew up in a hockey family in River Falls, Wisconsin, and his move to sled hockey began through the Minnesota Wild Sled Hockey Program.
At school, he attends Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, where he was named platoon leader — showing leadership off the ice as well.
