TOKYO 2020 PARALYMPIC GAMES

SITTING VOLLEYBALL

The US won the gold medal in women’s sitting volleyball at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. It was Team USA’s first gold medal in sitting volleyball, and the fourth consecutive medal performance for the US women. The US men’s team lost all three of their matches at the 2016 Rio Games.

 

USA AMPUTEE VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS

CLASSIFICATION

Sitting volleyball players are assigned one of two classifications, VS1 (more impaired) and VS2 (less impaired). A team can have a maximum of two VS2-classified players on its roster, and a maximum of one VS2-classified player on the court at any given time. With respect to limb difference, the classification criteria are:

VS1
Leg amputation at the ankle or above
Amputation of all five digits on one hand, or eight digits acoss both hands
Upper-limb difference in which the affected arm is at least 33 percent shorter than the unaffected arm

VS2
Leg amputation below the ankle
Loss of both thumbs, or index/middle/ring fingers on both hands
Loss of four fingers on one hand, or of the thumb/index/middle fingers on one hand

In addition to limb difference, sitting volleyball players may be classified on the basis of muscle power, range of joint function, neurological function, and physical stature.
