Travis David Ricks

The backstory:
Allan joined the U.S. Army in 2003 and lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in 2013 at age 29. A dedicated runner before his injury, Allan returned to the sport after his injury and began competing in triathlon in 2015. After being accepted into the Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), he won three consecutive U.S. Paratriathlon Championships (2017-2019).

Away from the racecourse:
Allan is married and has three daughters. He returned to active Army duty in 2015 and is one of the few amputees ever to achieve fully deployable status.

In his own words:
“The military strongly encourages physical fitness to relieve stress. One of the things I was able to bring forward from my military experience was a tough mental attitude. I’ve brought that over to the athletic side. The military teaches a lot about discipline. You need a lot of discipline as an athlete.”

“It wasn’t the competition of triathlons I fell in love with. It was the community. One of the things that really hooked me into it is that everyone was very humble. Another thing, the diversity of it drew me in. It kind of reminded me of the military, it was like working with my team and having a squad.”
