The Backstory:
At age six Cody Bureau started swimming and just two years later he was in a farming accident that cost him his left hand. This didn’t hold him back at all, through a hospital program he was encouraged to pick up para-swimming and the training began. A few years after, he attended his first championship and later set his first American record at age 11. With focus and hard training, Bureau competed in the 2004 Paralympic Games swimming the 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley (IM). He went on to train at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center and earn a bronze medal at the 2008 Paralympic Games, as well as attend both the 2012 and 2016 games. Bureau has gone on to set numerous other American records and is a great contender at the upcoming Tokyo Games.
Away from swimming:
Bureau attended both Virginia Tech University and Westmoreland Community College. He enjoys hanging out with his dog and getting outside, whether that’s hiking, fishing, or off-roading.
