Born in China with fibular hemimelia, Maddry was adopted by an Alaskan family and had her right leg amputated at age eight. She hooked up with Challenge Alaska soon thereafter and learned skiing and snowboarding. She traveled frequently to adaptive sports competitions in the lower 48 and joined Move United’s Elite Team, which allowed her to receive encouragement and training from Paralympians such as Keith Gabel and Mike Schultz. Maddry finished just off the podium at the 2021 World Championships in Lillehammer, Norway.
Away from the slopes:
Maddry is pursuing a degree in architecture at the University of Alaska.
In their own words:
“Life has been so good since [my amputation]—I’ve met so many more people than I would have otherwise, and I love it.”
